    Default Downy Woodpecker

Just a local resident that is oft neglected in favour of northern visitors in the winter and other migrants in spring/summer/fall. Taken near a feeder set-up. There was originally a blueish cast on this fella (possibly caused by the reflecting snow below - and seeing as there is no blue at all on this species I knew I could desaturate the blue and cyan channels completely without affecting the natural colouration:)

    Canon 40D + 100-400L @400mm, 1/640s., f/7.1, ISO 640, no EC, natural light, handheld, ~80% full-frame.

Beautiful capture Dan... great pose and detail, and I really like the tree trunk filling the left side of the frame. Really nice work.

I like the angle, exposure control and BG. Maybe a bit more room at the bottom if you have.

Daniel, this is a very cool pose! The tree cropped on the left side and the bird looking to the right really work for me...something a bit different for this common species. You nailed the exposure and kept a lot of detail in the black. Your blue/cyan desaturation resulted in a warmer image...love it! A little bit more room on the bottom would be nice, but this is still a very nice image. Good work!

In addition to all the good points that the others have mentioned, I like the way the tree is angled. A completely straight tree would be much less visually interesting. I too would like a bit more room at the bottom.

It may be a commonly seen species, but you came away with a very nice image and good PP info for others to read!

Nice one Daniel. I find this a challenging species but you've presented it very well. You picked nice flat light, a great BG, and a not-too-intrusive tree trunk to present the bird and it works really well. Sharpness throughout is great too. I agree that a smidge more room at the top would be optimal.

Love the pose, and the COMP that gives him lots of room in front. You might try lightening the iris a bit and eliminating the tiny bit of curled bark at the top of the frame.... And love, love, love the BKGR.

Nice and sharp and the comp works great for me, there is a small piece of looks like peeled back bark right at the top of the branch that is a bit distracting and not sure about the size of font for your signature.
