Please help me identify the specifics of this bird. Also, any idea what the dark black area is a bit above a line from the back of the beak to the eye?
This was taken in Corkscrew Swamp in Naples, Florida.
David is right on. Overall the colouration of this bird is reminiscent of a North American warbler but its worth noting key features which makes this a finch and not a warbler. The main one is the bill which in this bird is conical and adapted to seed eating and cracking. Warblers are for the most part insect eaters and have a narrow, pointed bill for picking up small objects while gleaning in amongst the trees or on the ground.
Thanks John. Your explaination of the differences between the warbler and finch was very helpful. The dark splotchiness above and foward of the eye is a normal part of molting?
