This shot was made from Jim Neiger's boat during his "flight school" course! Nikon D200, 80-400 at 400, f5.6 1/1600th, manual everything! Cropped a tiny bit, PP'ed in CS3. Jim's class is FANTASTIC! highly recommended!

Not everyday you get to photograph an oncoming Barred Owl! The eyes suffer slightly from what seems like subject motion blur or camera shake. Were the wings and tail originally underexposed? I like the comp :-)

Good for you Dan! Jim tried all during the course to call out a Barred Owl for our group, but we never saw one. You got good light as a bonus. Looks pretty good on my monitor.

Love the pose and agree that a trip with Jim is a wonderful experience. The image is just not quite sharp. You might try running a contrast mask on the bird--that often helps in such cases. (Unsharp mask at 15/65/1 or thereabouts.)

Dan, congratulations on such a great picture! For me everything is great, but I admit the need of some extra sharpening on face, not much though.
