cheryl, i dont know. maybe give it a try. whatever you do, i think i would keep the bg on the darker/woody side to keep it looking natural.

The raised foot makes it and I'm finding the raggedy winter coat an interesting plus. Good eye contact, too. I think some bg blur might work.

I might give that a try Cheryl using the blur tool. You'd have to see how it looks.

    Hi Cheryl,
I like the composition and capture...the deer has good details...the raised hoof is a big plus. I see a bluish cast in tyhe snow..as far as the background goes; I would leave it the way it is, would have liked to have seen the deer moved a tad to the left at the time of capture; in order to avoid the branch off the head problem; or using a wider aperture of perhaps a f/5.6 to further blurring the background naturally...looking forward to your next one...

Wow! Young ones already and it's still Jan. Hope there is no real cold spell. Nice shot Cheryl. I don't mind the bg other than the tree right behind deer. My guess is they may not go very far and you may get another chance at them if this one does not quite do it for you. I like it. Very unigue shot. Dave

Dave, I don't think this is a newborn fawn since it has no spots. Unfortunately, we have had many days of record breaking cold here.
I have been to that same area two times, and found this group of does and fawn there both times in the late afternoon. It looks like they browse through this open area on their way to where they have been bedding down for the night. But what makes the nearby area a good spot for the deer to bed down, makes it very difficult to get close to them. lol
Wish I could find the corresponding spot for the group of bucks! I found one of their well used pathways, but not them.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I really appreciate you taking the time!

I like it Cheryl. The Bg while it could be better deer don't always cooperate, with the tail in the on alert position I wonder how much moving around it would have tolerated. Can always try next time. I do like that tail and the upraised foot, he/she is looking at you too. Really cute image and good job on the exposure in some mixed light.

Thanks, Nonda. Let me know when you are driving up, and we can all go and give it another try. :)

Excellent capture Cheryl If you have the time try moving left/right to keep prominent branches form coming out of the head. Bg wise I would not do any heavy blurring since its going to look artificial ... just do enough so it looks like it was taken with a fast lens wide open !!! bg is what it is !!!
