This one has a lot of shadow with no details. I tried several adjustments with out success. Does that ruin as otherwise nice photo? I was not sure where to crop--pelican up or down?
    1/2700, ISO 640, f13.0, -1/3, 295FL. Sunny afternoon last week.

Kathy, I like your crop, I don't know if you can get much out of the shadows. I did a shadows and highlights twice, then screen and then had to do a noise reduction, and this was all I seemed to be able to get out of it.

Really good eye contact Kathy and certainly sharp!

Like the bit of extra Jackie came up with in the re-post

    Hi Kathy,
when doing these types of captures; you need to watch the sun angle. The sun was hitting your bird from the eleven o'clock position, thats the reason why you have this prominent shadow cast...also would like to see more room around the wing tips; its too cramped...I like the flight capture and the fact that the tips of the wings are curled up...give him more room...also like that baby blue sky, the head angle and sharp eye contact are super...looking forward to your next one...

Hi Kathey - nice HA and Eye Contact - agree that it feels way to tight - Mr Pelican needs some room to fly into :)

    looking forward to more :)

Hi Kathy The image is technically fine just the pose. For pelicans you need to have good light on the bird and some poses just don't work. These guys are numerous but not easy coming up with a keeper.

Your best bet is when they land straight at you with the sun at your back. Flying overhead is tough but can be done at the beach is there is a lot of reflection from the sand up to the bird. btw I have not been successful with fill flash because of the distance to bird and ambient light.
