Took this a year ago from Jim Neiger's boat hand held. Nikon D2X, 500mm, shot at f/4.5 @1/800 ISO500. I have always liked this image and am interested in how the rest of the viewer thin. Thanks in advance.

From what I see, I most likely like it. :) Could you post a larger version? It can be 800 pixels on the longest side. It might be a bit tight in the frame as is.

I would be more than happy to give you a bigger version, but I am not sure how to send it before my 24 hours are up. Is there a way? Thanks: Wheeler

I think you can replace the current one if you go to edit and 'advanced'.

Great capture of this moment. As mentioned earlier, it is a bit tight in the frame and looks quite noisy on my monitor.

    Alex,
Tell me what part of the image looks noisy to you. I think the sky might be, but I could cure that with a noise reduction program/plugin. I will try ading a little to the edges of the frame as it is a crop and I have space to work with. Thank you for your thoughts and criticism on this image. All thoughts help.

It's most noticeable in the brown parts of the plumage and BG.

The parts of plumage Alex is talking about are really way too noisy. Shadow/Highlights tool, I assume?

Good try, but you assumed wrong as I did not use the S/H tool, maybe ISO-500 with the D2X?

I've heard that (older) Nikons were pretty bad at high ISOs, but since 500 is not that high, I'm finding it hard to believe that the wings look so noisy on the unedited version..

    Toomas,
I agree with you 100% that 500ISO should not be high enough to cause any sugnificant noise, but I know I didn't us the S/H tool. The only other thing I can think of that might have caused the noise is the image is cropped about 50%. May I also say that I don't see the noise you speak of in the wings, but I am new at this and so I defer to you.

    Hi Wheeler,

I went back and looked at my version of this image and I think I know where the noise comes from. I have an almost identical image. My exposure for this image was slightly dark, but it was 1/3 stop brighter than your exposure. This tells me that you must have brightened the image considerably using levels or brightness tools most likely. This can magnify noise just like the SH tool. Any brightening of the image tends to make noise more apparent. That in combination with the crop and 6mp resolution (high speed crop on the D2x) have combined to make the image appear slightly noisy. I'm assuming that you used the high speed crop mode because I was using the same focal length on a 1D2N and mine would be more than a 50% crop to make it the same size as yours. You will be able to see the noise better if you magnify the image. It isn't that obvious in the displayed size in this thread, but I think some folks blow it up to get a better look and the noise is easier to see when they do this.

Thanks Jim, I would like to see yours sometime. I'll have to see if I was using high speed crop. It is quite possible. The difference in f/stop was more than likely the difference in our metering systems. If you remember I had to shoot at about 1/2 a stop below you to get the same result. I'll also check to see whether I used levels and brightened the image. Thanks for your thoughts.
