Red carpet welcome, Tom, a lovely first post with good exposure and good whites.
You can make use of our size allowance and post a bit bigger, hard to judge at such small size.

I hope your BPN experience can be a great one and that we can help you improve your skills :)

    Lookoing forward to more!

Welcome to BPN! I like the way you positioned the bird off-center. He is well lit and has a nice catchlight. You might consider darkening the lower right corner some as it is a lot brighter than the other corners.

Looking forward to your next post.

    Welcome Tom to BPN.

Though perhaps not the best strategy for this image as going low probalby would have obscured the feet, anytime you can get closer to the bird's point of view you increase the intimacy of your image.

I agree on toning down the hot whites in the snow and would suggest cloning out the seed.

I also like how you got the tail at a diagonal point towards a corner. Diagonals in images are strong compositional lines.

Another welcome Tom! A common winter bird in much of the country, but I'm aching to see one down here in South Florida! I agree with Robert on the nice use of a diagonal with the tail position. Since so much of the image is snow, I think a bit tighter view would have been nice. They can be fairly tolerant birds if you move slowly, so maybe you could have gotten just a bit closer. Nice first post and do hope to see you post some more.
