I found that I really like using these plug-ins and I'm so glad there's a forum here for me to share them.
I have one of my daughter from the summer that I edited. I think it looks pretty good.
    What do you think?
    Thanks for looking.

    Comments and critics welcome.

the edges are cool. But it needs a contrast boost and some dodging and burning as you deem appropriate to give more tonal range. I'd definitely lighten her up. She gets lost in the grays. A lovely girl. If you work it you can make the image really pop.

Sharna, I'd love to know what plug-in you used to get that border. Nice looking young girl!

I agree with Michael - pop the whites of her eyes and the places on her face where the light is catching and maybe boost the contrast a bit. I like the effect overall but think you're "toning down" her real beauty.

I followed the suggestions here and I feel it helped this image immensely. Thanks Michael. Thanks everyone.
Here's the reworked image. What do you think?

contrast is better, but the tone on your daughter is still too dark and she's getting lost in the background. Robert is probably more knowledgeable with layer masks, but I would use my viveza plug in just on her to brighten her up a bit.

    Hi Sharna,
Just did this quickly. Lightened the overall exposure and lightened her face with NIK Silver Efex Pro. Erased the eyes back to the original tone. Cool frame.

    Sharna,
I like the border, but I especially like the background.
Both remind me of the kind of ragged disorganized transition youths have to adulthood.

here's my fix. Using Nik Viveza, I boosted the contrast and brightness in her face and body to even out the exposure/contrast levels. I then boosted global contrast levels and darkened the background.

Thanks everyone for your help and your comments. It's how I learn and grow.
I did a rendition of it by burning the bg but I think Michaels, and jackies look better :D.
You all are awesome photographers and I feel I pale in comparison to your skills.
I can't shoot a bird in flight if it hovored above me for an hour I think LOL.
Thanks for all you guys have done for me.
