Does the wing position of this white pelican ruin this image or is it acceptable ? I have frames where his wings look better but the splash doesn't look as good.

Perfectly acceptable IMHO !
The "crouched" wing position goes well with the tucked in feet and
gives an interesting overall shape to the bird. The spread primaries also
add interest. Pano crop works well for this pose.
The wing positon, while not ideal, is perfectly fine IMO. To me it's the lack of eye contact that detracts from the image a bit. Like the splash, sharpness, and exposure.
