    Default Minnesota Loons

I'll have a few days by myself in Minnesota this July and I would like to photograph loons. I can bring my 500 mm with the TCs. Any suggestions on places to go? I won't have a boat, so I'll need to work off of land. I have been looking at the Itasca State Park State Park and Leech Lake areas. I'll be starting from the twin cities. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for good locations. But, perhaps if you subscribe to the MN Bird mailing list, some birders there can help you out. Also check out the Minnesota Camera Talk forum. Good luck!

Hi Andrew. Without a boat, you will likely have difficulties getting close to the birds - unless you find some very cooperative birds. Itasca State Park may be a good place to check as there are a number of lakes there that have loons present. I believe you can also rent boats and canoes at Lake Itasca which would get you some closer opportunities. Good Luck.
