I hope people don't mind 2 different people posting rather similar images of the same species on the same day. This one was part of a small flock in freezing spray on the very edge of the Bay of Fundy recently. Another few inches on the icy rocks and I might have been swept in.

    Richard,

I like the framing of the bird, his head turn and the cold look to the image. You do have some clipped highlights (feathers on body and in the BG behind head to name a few) so I suggest you convert it again and correct for that in the conversion process.

I feel the BG is too bright and do not like the blue tone on the rocks. I reposted with the following tweaks.

    BG

Create a layer from a highlight selection. Go to http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...d.php?p=161168 and under Selecting Highlights and Shadows (Photoshop), Method 2 this is how I created the blending mode layer. I selected the highlights using this method and then hit CTRL-J to copy to a layer.

Next change the blending mode to MULTIPLY (see http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=20434 under Blending Modes (Photoshop) for details. You can adjust opacity to taste though I left it at 100%.

    Blue Tone

In PSCS3 I did a Hue Saturation correction and zero'ed out the blue and cyan channel. You can see how these two colors affect the image by maxing them out and looking that the results before going to zero.

Robert's repost works well for me, great information there. The image looks soft IMO.

I agree with Maxis about the softness. Robert did a very good job with the repost and explaining how he did it (really apreciated!). The composition works for me :)

Thanks Robert and others - the blue was indeed ice on the rocks, but your repost and explanation are certainly an improvement.
