Interesting choice of crop, but I like it. I would lighten the iris a bit to make the pupil more visible. I would probably tone down the brighter parts of the bill too. Good colours, and sharpness. I like the tufts of feathers along the neck. You have a good looking BG but with a few brighter areas in it to eliminate if you are inclined to do so (e.g. thick OOF streak below bill).
I like the comp Stuart with the diagonal coming out of the corner. I agree with Daniel's suggestions. I am OK with the BG and don't find it distracting.
I like the composition, sharpness and eye contact. The BG is nice but I think that you can make it even better if you add a touch of saturation to the BG. I agree with Daniel about the bright parts of the bill and the lightening of the pupil.
