Took this on the "beach" in Scotland. Loved the fact that it has three generations all in the sun in their own way--by the way, it was July and cold enough to us that we had on heavy jackets. Couple of questions: are the contrasts too much? also, in competitions, like the State Fair, I see that I would have to say I have permission slips from people in photos submitted. I understand the basis of this, but does anyone know if such would apply to something like this where people are out in a public place and it's just a random, unstaged shot?
Any comments to upgrade the quality of this shot would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Hazel,
I like it as presented...this was a conversion to black and white...can you please post the EXIF data...my only suggestion would be to run some noise reduction in the background, especially in the sky around the clouds...goos show....
Hazel, I think your conversion looks good. I find the diagonal on the bottom a little distracting. I love these kind of candid shots. I think you do need something called a model release if you are having something published, not sure about entering a competition though.
Looks very nice Hazel. I think you have captured the mood and setting well. I like Jackie's idea of getting rid of the diagonal on the LRC, a quick mask should do that. I hope the young fellow on the wall was not looking at a 20 ft drop on the other side!
I think you will find a release is not needed when making the image in a public place. Always best to check !!
The composition is really good and your image should do well in competition. I like how the entire group is framed and the groups interacting. The younger ones placed high, with middle age wise at a mid level then the older looking out of the frame. Feel a flow through the image, strong. The diagonal mentioned by Jackie does catch my eye and wish it wasn't there.
B&W is all about local contrast and I think you can get more range out of the image. The best and easiest at the moment is working within LR 2.0 I'm a fan on these images and have done the best with the program. You did do well placing the dark areas but can bring some out in the whites for contrasts, particularly the clouds. Wish I could tweak here but working out of a laptop and will be for the next few days !!
