    Default Mmmmm ... what now?

    Hi all,

On the back of my "Need a new lens ... but which one" thread, I have thrown myself another curve-ball.

The fact of the matter is that I will only be able to afford ONE high-end toy and am indecisive as to what to get ... the 500 F4 or the 400 DO or (my new dilema ... the 1D).

I have never had a PRO camera such as the 1D, and my progression through the ranks has been: Rebel XT to 30D to 40D (current).

Do you think it is worthwhile then to get a new camera? I was thinking of the 1D MKIV (when it arrives:D). There are a couple of things that I have heard buddies speaking about that have always enticed me ... 45-point focus, 10 frames a second, better and faster AF, noise levels ... etc. All seem like really cool stuff to have.

So ultimately ... what do you think: 500 f4, 400DO or 1D MkIV ?? (and yes, I know there are big price differences - not too worried about that)

    Thanks
    Vic

Go with the lens first and then think about the body later. As for the lens I would pick the 500 mm.

Glass lasts, cameras come and go. A top end lens will do more for your images than a pro body on an ordinary lens IMHO.

Get the lens first. I had a similar choice, and I bought a 500mm lens instead of a pro-body 5 years back. My 500mm has been in constant use since then.

Absolutely definitely certainly indubitably buy the 500mm F4 L IS there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind. I did an awful lot of research and agonising - trust me it's the best thing since sliced bread, you won't regret it. The lens is the best compromise in terms of portability and reach, the only limiting factor will be you and not the equipment. I bought one and have recommended it to others - they all agree it has transformed their photography experience.

500mm, hands down. Besides, the 40D you have is no slouch anyways ;-)

Another vote to buy glass. Remember, they don't loose much value over the years. I would go with the 500 mm anyday and won't get a 1D. I would go with the 50 or even 60D when it comes out. They do an amazing job!

Go with the good glass; I vote for the 500 f/4.

Unanimous! Go for the 500 F4. You will never regret it. Eventually you will get a one series body, but you will get more and longer term use of your $$ going with the lens first. 500 F4 vs 400 DO is no contest. The 500 is tack sharp, fast and good bokeh. The subject is 25% larger in the frame.

    Victor,

Definitely the glass. Tony is right that "cameras come and go". Look at all the technological advances in camera bodies during the last few years. A trend of speed in innovation is making this years top choice into next years hand-me-down equipment. When you are finally ready for a body though, be rest assured you'll have the latest and greatest to choose.

Plus, you have to think of it this way. Would you rather be shooting a 40d with a 500 f/4 or a 1d with a 18-55mm Rebel kit lens? :)

    Stefan
