I had the opportunity to spend some days with this beautyful kingfisher (and with a 500/4 IS). Although it was raining I like the soft light the clouds created.
I have a lot of pictures, but I like this picture a lot because of the special look of the fish.....
Mark III Canon 500/ 4
f 6.3 / 1/200sec / ISO 1600
Did some NR on the background and just very little sharpening on the head
C/C much appreciated

This is great Rosl. You were obviously battling for light (1/200 iso 1600) but have coped well. I love the rain blurs and drops beneath the perch. The image looks a little soft to me and I would include the near wing, foot and breast into the sharpening
Hi Marko,
thanks for looking at my picture... I am glad, that you guys seem to like it :-))
Actually it is not my new lens; I had the opportunity to rent one for two days. But after those two days I sold two of my lenses (70-200 2.8 too bad I had to sell it....-for sure I will buy one in some years again, when I have some money- and the 17-40 4 I used it rarely... so no problem to give it away...), and now I ordered a used 500mm 4 lens.... Yippie!!!!

Hi Rosl,
Very nice image! The head on look at the fish is priceless and really puts this over the top. The rain drop streaks and bg add much appeal. My only nit is that it appears a bit soft in places. A little more USM applied selectively should fix that. Well done! Imagine trying to make this image without the 1D3. The camera really shines in situations like this one.
Ok, thanks to everybody! I reposted that picture after sharpening the body a bit. I am always afraid to oversharpen an image. So I applied the sharpening only to the head at first. Now it is all over the body; ok now?
Yes I see what you mean about the fish Rosl, I can just see a caption coming from its mouth saying "Oh ****"!
But seriously this is a lovely image of the kingfisher. I love the soft light and the great BG - the falling rain drops are a bonus. I also borrowed a Canon 500mm lens - I was at a nature work-shop in the rianforests of Queensland when Canon turned up with a variety of lenses and said "first in first serve" so I grabbed the 500mm and carted it around the rainforest for the day. Got some great images but couldn't afford to purchase one!!
