Hmmmmmm...let's try this again. My first ever post had no thumbnail available. Must not have been paying attention to file size. This is my first post as a new member. Over the last couple of years I have become hopelessly addicted to bird photography. I am very much looking forward to critiques of my work so that I can try to constantly improve. How's the sharpness? Pose? What about overall composition? Cropping comments? Thank you all. Tom Sayers

I would sharpen the bird a bit.

    Pose?
    Good pose IMO.

I would leave some more room on the left. Some may find the perch taking too much of the photo. I find that perch interesting. But for some reason it looks like part of the perch looks sharper than some part of the bird. Not really sure. Could be just my eyes fooling me.

Hi Tom Glad you were able to get the image up on the board !!! For evaluating try posting at the max size, easier to evaluate.

The exp looks pefect, good head angle and the image is sharp.

Cropping wise would show a little more of the perch stem and more room for the bird. A good rule of thumb is having the bird take up not more than 80% of the frame. Also you want to have more room form the beak to the edge than tail to edge.

Do like the overall feel and you got yourself an excellent image, looking forward to more !!!

    Hi Tom,
I like the capture, you have a fine looking bird...I would post at a higher resolution. Also the subject needs more room to the left of the frame. You need to open up the mid-tones and selective sharpen the area around the eye...looking forward to your next one...

Hi Tom. Welcome to BPN. Exposure is spot on and you have some wonderful tones. Sharpness looks fine to me. As far as composition goes, I'd like to see more canvas at the bottom and to the left. Nice first post. Looking forward to seeing more.

    Cheers.

Lovely image, like the shades of brown working together, great bg.
Agree with the suggestion for more space to the left, and maybe on the top. The teasel is a bit overpowering (not hard to overpower a siskin though). I think there's lots siskin-ness here.

Thanks for the input Gus. The res was 72 dpi. I've always been told that with web-based viewing anything beyond that will produce changes undetectable to our eyes. Your thoughts on that? Tom

Tom, I agree with Al on the composition...more room on the left and a bit more of the perch would be nice. Great job of exposure and DOF. Nicely done!

I agree with everything said here, but also just want to say what a wonderful background, too! I really love the colors, and yes - more stem, and more room on the left. You'll get the hang of sizing the images for posting.

    Welcome!
