Setting up a Photo website

I wish to set up a website dedicated to my images as many photoartists have done. I use a Mac, PS CS3, Lightroom for my images and have a registered webaddress.
Any suggestions for a fairly simple way to create a website. I have tried iWeb.

For simple, probably one of those premade sites that offer different templates,
like Livebooks. Personally, I use IFP3.

What type of budget are you looking at?

Doug, I am, well looking something for free or at best low cost. I do not intend to sell, just for display.

If you want full control for your website, the best thing to do is to buy Dreamweaver and built your own. If you don't have much experience in HTML or whatever technology you would like to use, then buy a template and customize to your needs. Or hired a web designer!

Forget about those "web builder" type of website, they do nothing but to wast your time and money.

You are going to need software to edit a template. Dreamweaver is just one of them and the one I use. It does not matter if you use Mac or PC. Check them out at www.templatemonster.com

You can buy one and have someone do the editing for you. That's as simple as it gets :)

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one, Maxis. I've built several commercial websites from scratch--but chose one of those 'web builder' tools for my own images. (I'm using Exposure Manager). My site would be better if I'd done it myself, but it would have taken MUCH longer, would take MUCH more maintenence, and I'd have to see to backup, etc myself. Instead, I've got a very easy to use site that costs me 99 bucks a year and I can use it to sell or just for display by a simple menu choice.

While I agree with your first paragraph, the web builder sites offer good value for the money and allow me to concentrate on my photography while I let others manage a large gob of 'webmastering' work. IMHO.

You might consider using the Web section of Lightroom to build your photo galleries. However, you would need some other program the build your Home and other pages.

A lot of hosts offer pre-packaged scripts to handle installs of common gallery software such as Gallery or Coppermine. It saves you from having to upload, extract, install, create database, etc... The software will create the pages and thumbnails on the fly for you, handle uploading other images, take care of descriptions and display, etc...

Go to iWeb and get an easier than life template for a minimum year price of keeping it up. My .mac account costs $199 a year with extra space for videos.
A website for images should run $99 a year, and you can pick from many templates, name your pages etc

Try Smugmug.com for a start. unlimited space for images, you can have personal galleries with log on ids for friends and family, you can subscribe at the pro level which allows folks to purchase your images in a number of way and you are out of the loop. They take the order, collect the money, print the pics and send them out. Way to easy. Check it out.

Check out JAlbum (www.jalbum.net). It's free, has lots of templates (skins), many with a lot of customization options and there is a rather active and supporting discussion board. You can upload the generated album to your own domain site (e.g. ~$10/mo) or use their new free webhosting service.
