Little grebe floats along in the late evening sun at the Salton Sea. Image solution as follows:

50D, EF70-200mm f/2.8L + 1.4x @ 280mm, 1/500 @ f/5.6, Evaluative metering with exposure set manually at +1, AI servo focus. Converted from RAW with DPP then cleaned up in PS.

    Happy new year everyone!

Kerry its a bit dark, but in this case it really works for me, good feather detail even in the darks. Love the water and reflection. NICE!

While the red in the one water swirl maybe should be there, it doesn't really fit and I think a bit of CW rotation might be in order?

Good points Nonda I think you could lighten the bird and keep the mood, would also like to see more of the wake behind. It will change the proportion and accentuate motion.

When I get home I'm going to try something in CS4 and will post

Kerry, The mood and colors are great for me! I agree w/ rotation-nice details could sharpen the eye just a tad.

Agree with the suggestions above. I love the wet feathers along the sides...that really adds some nice texture and interest to the image.

    Hi Kerry,
I can appreciate what you were doing here...I like the base capture...a few points that need to be illustrated...I cropped your composition into a semi-pano frame. I adjusted the water level about 1 degree CW, because the duck was swimming up hill. I opened up the blacks on the subject's face and body to bring out more detail, selective sharpened the eye and face and the contour line of the feathers along the body including portions of the reflection... The hot white spots were toned down, I boosted saturation and contrast just slightly and ran noise reduction in the background...see if this presents best to you...

Hi Kerry I tried the content aware scale in CS4 but not suitable for the procedure, did get a little stretch but not as much as I wanted from the back.
