    The harsh light is making this image very difficult - there are a lot of blown highlights in the lily flower which is dragging the eye away form the subject. I also have having difficulty seeing the bird clearly against the background - not sure if your lens opens up any wider but blurring the background more would help. A slightly lower shooting position (if possible) may help too. Fill flash with a Better Beamer would help manage some of the contrast problem. You've gone to a lot of effort getting in the water with a monopod - try the same technique earlier or later in the day using frontal light and you could end up with a stunner

    Besides the points made by Tony Would have moved to distance or eliminate the flower Seems to compete With the bird Your best bet here is to photograph earlier/later !!!
