    Default Australia - Papuan Frogmouth

Iron Range N.P., Queensland, Australia - 1D3, 500mm+1.4xTC, hand held, 1/125, F5.6, ISO 2000, manual exposure, full frame

This image was made using a spotlight. No flash was used. The eyes are naturaly red and the spotlight was held at an indirect angle to avoid red-eye.

Looks like this one's already got a serious case of red eye! :D

    Good one Doug :-)

Must have been a challenge to get this right!! What an awesome species, must have been a thrill. I see it is full-frame, but I would consider adding canvas below - the tail tip seems rather close to the edge.

Very cool subject! Was it possible to have the spotlight from the other side to avoid the shadow of the perch? Agree about the extra canvas. Well done.

Hi Jim and congratulations on getting such a weird bird!
This must be the counterpart of the Nyctibiidae spp of Tropical America. Great work achieved with the spotlight, sharpness and compo but I agree with Daniel about adding canvas on bottom.

    Hi Jim
I have seen a Tawny Frogmouth in Cairns and just checked "Simpson & Day" which confirms red eyes of Papuan Frogmouth but is it possible to have "Red eyes" on a red eye bird?
    Cute regardless.

Red eye is reflection of light back off the retina and results in red pupils (usually a problem with human subjects and compact cameras - nocturnal animals usually have a brighter reflection ("steel eye") due to a reflective layer behind the retina)- this bird has red a red iris and no sign of red eye despite having red eyes:D

    Thanks Tony
" Red Eye" = Retina Red Eye & not Iris Red Eye.
    I think I've got it.

Spot light used to perfection. Great show of his lovely eyes, and stands out nicely against the night sky. Great capture Jim.
