I had never understood the name of these guys until I started seeing them up close. This is my first ever encounter this close and my second photograph of a red-shouldered. I would have liked to get slightly higher but the angle I did get is the only one I could get without the ability to hover in mid-air (one day I will design a silent personal rocket pack). I think the background is also a little busy. I already removed various branches and leaves in PP so I didn't want to go too much further.

C & C Always welcome - Don't go easy - I want to learn
Good looking bird Rob You did come up with a sharp image, well exposed and pleasing. Can increase the contrast a bit by selective color.
Agree with your assesstement of being a steep angle and btw on way to lessen the angle is using a long focal lengths and converters. If I see one perched with a good bg but high, I will set up the 600 with 2x, will flatten the angle.
Thank you Alfred
I wonder if you have time could you point me in the right direction for the increased contrast with colour selection...I have never done that before. If there is already a thread with details just throw me over to it.
Rob
p.s. So instead of having to build a silent personal rocket pack I just need to buy a 600mm!! That is actually much easier but as I have found out just as expensive!! :-)
Hi Rob,
I like the composition and capture, its a shame that the bird was not looking back at you...You have very good color rendition with sharp details...the background you can blur a bit more...
Rob, Nice sharp photo with lots of good detail and colour. I don't mind the habitat. I wonder if using some APTATs techniq's you could roll that eye back for better contact and if that would be unnatural? I also wondered where the Red Shoulder came from, now I know.
I wonder if Alfred had meant a 2X TC plus your 70/300 lense to get to 600mm?
Hi Dave
Thanks for the comments.
Just wondering about your APTATs techniques - I have never heard of this before...wondered if you could send me in the right direction to find out about it.
Unfortunately none of the TC's work with my 70-300mm and there isn't enough to work with on aperture even if they did. So I am pretty certain Alfred meant using the TC's with his own 600mm.
Rob
Good capture Rob , i can clearly see the red shoulder . What version of the 70-300 are you using ? I use a kenko 1.4 TC with a 70-300 vr with some success it will auto focus. Again good capture :)
On the BPN website go to the Educational Resources Forum, open the My Pictures Don't Look Like That thread and scroll down to where Artie lists as bunch of books etc. APTATS is a cd prepared by Robert O'Toole with several very neat PS techniques, including moving eyes around as well as enhancing them.
I have found all of the resources I have purchased very help full. Good Luck
Dave
Hi Glenn
I am using the Nikon 70-300mm VR.
I have a hard enough time at f / 5.6 but would be very interested to hear if the Kenko does work with this lens.
Hi Dave
Thank you very much for the link. Looks like some v.interesting stuff.
