In an early morning fog at Celery Fields, near Sarasota, FL, this group of Sandhill Cranes joined in their unmistakeable cry, calling the troops to prepare for departure for the day.

Technically, substantial fog required considerable effort in Photoshop CS3 and with Noise Ninja, to produce a more crisp and vibrant image. But the major problem I had involved jpeg artifacts that were most conspicuous around the heads of birds with blue sky background. These artifacts are not present in corresponding psd documents or in standard jpegs, only in jpegs prepared for the web. I've tried to clone out the jpeg artifacts, but there must be a better way.

What causes the jpeg artifacts in web images, and how can they be avoided?

Really like this image Norm. Did you do a white point, black point in curves to cut through the fog? Not too sure about jpeg artifacts, thought it was from noise or oversharpening. In NN you should be able to remove noise with or without sharpening. I am sure some one who is more of a techie will chime in.

The cranes are beautiful! I am not sure but the BG looks a little busy.

    Jackie:

I did the black/white point adjustments. The jpeg artifacts occur prior to any sharpening, immediately upon creating the web jpeg file.

Norm, try to save for the web at 200k-It's a larger file size than you posted -see if that helps

Norm, Denise's point may help. What is your PP program? I followed Fabs suggestions on how to size for posting for BPN. Also Al(fred) pointed out that when you have image size in PS downsize using bicubic sharper. Largest length will be 800 pixels (depending on the orientation of your photo), than I Save for Web at the closest to 200kb that I can get.

Thanks to everyone for suggesting to make the file size as close as possible to 200kb. In experimenting a bit, it has become clear that the jpeg artifact problem is due to the small size of my posting.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a link to Fabs suggestions on how to size for BPN posting, please do.

Just found it Norm. Just used search utility, typed in Fabs Forns for user name and sizing. It's a pretty good search engine at the top of the page.

    Hi Norm,
I like the composition and capture...very good advise given by Jackie. When you compress too much a jpeg file, it tends to degrade the image quality...sometimes you will get noise and the so called artifacts...

Thanks to all of your helpful suggestions, I'm reposting a better, larger image. That does take care of the artifact problem. All of your comments are most appreciated!
