Hi, I worked on the image. These are the steps. Lots of work but a great learning exercise.
Save a copy as PSD, rename “working”
Create a background copy to preserve the base copy
Using magnetic lasso, tolerance 10, select BK . Clear to leave only bird, tree on layer.
    Hue/Saturation, (hue +5, Sat +52).
Sharpen select areas of bird, 33%. Used this more for eye, back, talons, and some wing feathers.
Burn, 3%. very useful in working on the blown white body feathers. Selected prominent feather lines. Also used 11% in some areas.
Clone, 64%. Worked very well to apply some feather lines to the solid white blown area.
Create new layer and fill with the blue gradient of the BK. Move isolated bird layer to the top of this so that the two look merged.
Use eraser and blur as needed to clean up edges of the image.

hi hazel. love what you did with your image. your work really paid off!! the one thing i saw was a strong color cast over the bird. i did a color balance on the image but i'm afraid i may have destroyed the mood you were trying to capture in yours. also cloned the dust bunny and sharpened the eye. see what you think.

i really like what you did!!!

I see what you did. It does give a different effect. Not sure if I care for one over the other--just different. What do you mean by a strong color cast? At first I thought you meant a halo effect, but I don't see that. Thanks for killing that dust bunny! Missed it.

    Well done Hazel,
Your extra effort did pay off. The most important thing, is that you learned by doing...I like the details on the bird. Doctor Davis is correct on the color cast...just correct it, a simple fix. I would like you to lighten up the area of the eye, just a tad, not too much, and selective sharpen it again by 2 percent...:) I'm proud of you...good show...:)
