    Default Head On Encounter

This was an image captured in Wyoming in December. The snow was falling and the Bison looked so beautiful , warm and content as they rested in the tall grasses.
The cropping of this image does break the rules for centering the subject but I felt the impact of this imaging was stronger when centered and the grasses to the left helped in the overall balance.

All comments are most appreciated. Thanks !

Judy, I can only dream of getting the super image. Can you pull any more detail out of the dark face? Here is a quick one: Q Mask of head - ran S/H, second Q Mask of darkest part and did Levels. Bob

Judy this is really a wonderful image!! I love the head on with the eye contact. The snow and the surrounds just top it off. I would like something in between Bob's and yours. I hope to go with Daniel this year, December, on this very tour. I cannot wait!!

Beautiful Image Judy. I agree with Nancy... re: happy medium between the original and Bob's edits. I also agree that placing it in the center makes it an even more powerful image. There is a herd of Bison not far from me... I can't wait until it snows again!

Great shot! Love the head-on view and the low angle. The reworked version really pulls out the detail!

Powerful image. I like the centered framing. your original image has much more saturation in the fur color. this is beautiful. However, I still think a bit more shadow detail in the face would be better yet. So, possibly a slight bit of shadow work on the face would be a good thing, but not as much as the repost.

    Really impressive.
I'm curious how a slightly tighter vertical crop would work.

Nice image, centered framing works well with this image. Details look good, an ever so slight opening of the shadows in face would be fine but I like it as posted.

    Hi Judy,
Centered comp works for me. I might even take it in to just outside the edge of the tallest blade of grass. Eyes and nose looks good as far as detail, maybe just a tiny bit of selective dodging up the middle of his head and between the horns. I find the bright FG a little to bright and might darken it a bit but I have a preference for darker photos. Impressive animals aren't they.

Centered works in this one. Great advise given above, I'd like something in between yours and the original, leaning more towards the darker.

Bob just wanted to thank you for the time and effort you spent on the repost. Much appreciated and I can see your reasons for wishing for a touch more detail in the darks. Many thanks !

The centered comp works well with this image. Excellent advice above.. The generally circular shape of the bison is a strong graphic tool and holds your eye.. Well done Judy...

    Judy,

Agree the bring up the shadows helps but as Fabs suggested I would go 1/2 between the two versions.
