Very nice James. I like the brilliant colours. I wonder how a nice, bright photo like this would do with some of the tech's down in the Outside The Box forum?

    Hi James,
I like the capture. You have a good head angle and eye contact. you need to reduce the saturation in the red channel; its a bit cooked. also need to take off from the bottom and add canvas to the top...the bird is placed just right in the frame...looking forward to your next one...

Like it James! Great pose and sharpness. The bird really pops against that BG. I agree with Gus about desaturating the red channel to bring out feather detail. I would also crop some off the bottom. With the bird looking left, I'd like to see more room on the left of the frame than on the right. Thanks for posting!

Gus is right...that red is cooked! Digital cameras tend to overdo the red channel so keep an eye on that in post processing. I used the hue/saturation adjustment in PS to lower just the red channel and then used levels to boost the midtones back up again once the oversaturated red was gone.

I agree with Gus that the bird is placed in a non-traditional place here and more canvas at the top would be a good way to rebalance that but I also really like the lower half of the image as well. You're right...you got a killer BG here!

Great thread I like the suggestions

I like the bg color contrasting with the cardinal Also the long lens technique for having such sharpness at the low shutter speed btw is that the non VR version?

Al, It is the non VR version the lens is about 20 years old but it was on a very heavy tripod. Jim
