Default Replacement for Canon 100-400 IS

This lens is getting a little long in the tooth( actually never been a favorite of mine and hated the push pull zoom) and looking for a replacement in that general telephoto range . Would prefer Canon and need IS. Would like comments from any one, especially if they have purchased a lens and are happy with it.

    Thanks

I have been really happy with the Canon 70-200F4IS and a 1.4tc as a substitute for the 100-400. I purchased it upon Artie's suggestion and have been really happy with it.

I have the 100-400, and if I had to do it over again I would probably go 70-200 IS 2.8 and use the 1.4 and maybe the 2x.

I have the non-IS 70-200 f.28 and have used the IS version too. They are both great lenses but are heavy to the point of I wont carry them on the spare body for flight use when I have my 600 out on the beach. The 70-200f4 is really really light and is incredibly sharp too...

Charles while I was using Canon I did sell my 100-400 since the bearings had trouble at the beach ... had it rebuilt several times. It was replaced with the 70-200 f4.0 IS and the 400 5.6.

It was more of a hassle taking two lenses but performance wise it was a solid move.

I think the 300mm F4 L IS is a great lens. It is my main nature photography lens.

It makes a fine 420mm F5.6 with the Canon 1.4x II. Stop down 1 click and sharpness if back.

add 25mm or 25mm+12mm extensiion tubes and you have an image stabilized macro lens.

After using Artie's at Bonaventure I went out and bought the Canon 70-200 f4 IS and sold the 100-400. It works really well with the 1.4 tc. Not quite the reach of the 100-400 but an outstanding replacement. Nothing much else out there that compares.

I replaced my 100-400 with a 300 f/4 IS. I still have the 100-400 sitting on a shelf for years. I also have a 70-200 f/4 IS. But still take the 300 when I want to travel light as I can use a 2x with a 1D camera and get the reach.

Thanks for all the comments and certainly gives me food for thought.
I sort of worry about speed of focus with f4 IS 70-200 and 1.4x? Any comments on that ?

No issues at all with focus speed on 40D and 50D.

    Chas.
It seems pretty fast on my 1D Mark II.

While I have been happy with my 100-400 and have produced many images that have been critically recognized, I just ordered the Canon 300 F4 IS. It seems that my wife and I are both reaching for a tele lens in this range at the same time. One of us using the 300 with the 1.4 will give us both 400 mm when we need it. I am looking forward to the sharpness and close focusing distance of the 300.

I use the 300mm f/4 with my Mark2 and it is a great combination.
