Went out late yesterday afternoon to see if any spoonies wanted to play - so didn't take full rig with me - just the basics as I really didn't think there was much around....
Well the lesson is be prepared - my first encounter with a Tawny Frogmouth (Very uncommon in our area) very very late in the afternnon, could have used a flash as the light level was very low.
Was amazed at how close I could get to these guys (really needed my extension tubes).
Bird was quietly nestled in a branch overhanging the river - quite hard to get a nice clean shot due to the tree branches etc - this was taken standing waist deep in the river about 8-10 feet away from the bird, light was all wrong (behind) nothing I could do about it.
Shutter speed was slow - could have bumped the ISO further but still would not have got a fast enough shutter speed, light was disappearing fast and decided to go with what I had and hope for a OK shot.

Hey Mr. Peters,
I like the close up pose. You have sharp details and very good color rendition I like the mellow yellow color of the eyes....My only suggestion to take this over the top is to clone out the white v blotch on top of the head...good show...
congrats on the find....who needs to critique it...you did it excellently yourself!!! personally i think you did awesome with what you had to work with. excellent detail and love those eyes. would love to see it after you rework the bg.
there is a frogmouth at the miami zoo. really cool birds.
