I only managed to get one half decent shot as the feeder was a little way off the board-walk and the 300mm is far too short. BUT...the painted bunting is my favourite bird and today is the first time I have seen it in the flesh so to speak. I also saw it elsewhere in the preserve but just stood and watched forgetting my camera round my neck and my tripod over my shoulder!!!

1/100 at f 5.6 - I know the 1/focal length rule but I am not experienced enough yet to do everything without thinking and when watching my favourite bird all thought went out of the window.

Congrats Rob !!! It is a neat bird and my first one was very much like it You will have many more chances.

As presented would take a little from the bottom and could tweak the bird a bit with curves. I set the black/white point then used levels moving the mid tone slider for lightening. Very nice image !!1

    Hi Alfred
Thank you very much for that. The new comp looks much better.
I did try doing everything you said in PShop but I am always worried about going too far. I know it is digital so if I screw up I can just apple-z. The more I get you guys to go that little bit further than I thought I was comfortable with the more I will realise that I can afford to go that little bit further. The Levels tool is something that I am almost scared of.

I can't imagine what it must have been like using film where there is no apple-z!!! I guess that is how you all got so good!!!

Thanks again for the great re-post.
