D70s 70-200VR 2XTE @ 400mm 1/1600 f5.6 -1/3EV ISO 400
I think this is a raven, not a crow (otherwise apologies to E. A. Poe for my title). I was photographing a different bird, a black and white one, last week when I spied this guy and took a couple quick snapshots without re-setting my camera. About a 50% crop. Did my image come out OK? Criticism, please . . .
Hi Wendell,
I like your base image, You were shooting in harsh light with the sun at an angle. On black birds like these, you should be using a plus EV compensation to open up the blacks, or use fill flash...Your head angle and eye contact are off, because Mr. Raven was looking up. I modified your image by opening up the shadows to try and get some of the details that were left, I cropped to a vertical selective sharpened the contours of the feathers in the wings and selective sharpened around the eye, boosted contrast and saturation...see if this present well with you...
I like the changes Gus but the image is already cropped 50% !!! Sure wish this all had been in camera Sure wish you were using a longer focal length !!
As presented just wish for a better head angle and less steepness !!!
Your version looks better to me, Gus. I'd love to be using a longer focal length, Alfred, but Santa Claus did not have one in his sleigh for me. I'm hoping to do better on my upcoming birthday . . . thanks for your attention, guys.
Great detail in the blacks Wendell. Exposure looks good. Light looks just a little harsh on the top part of the wing maybe??? Like the crop to vertical.
Yeah, Jackie, I like that vertical crop, too. And I'm pleased to have got this good an image considering the distance I was from the bird. i think that 70-200VR, even with a 2X, is a super lens -- just wish I had more reach (the complaint of many bird photogs, right?)
