Image was taken on a very gray day, so quite a bit of PP.--Cropped, USM, PE 7 Noise reduction. Camera data-- 40D, ISO 400, f 5.6, 1/100 at 300mm with old 70-300 mm Canon USM Zoom. In some respects, I am surprised it is as sharp as it is. All C&C welcome. One of these days, I will spring for the 100-400 mm L lense.:)

Hi Dave Nice looking Elk and love the pose !!! Placement wise might like to see him just like he is but on the other side of the frame.

Processing wise not sure why you had to do lots of it? Gary skies make for good images, just go with the flow. If the bg is white... leave it white !!! If you post the original will give it a try to process and see what I came up with.

As presented I see some funky colors and areas without pixels on its back, cropping wise the feet are very close to the bottom edge and will give more room !!

btw lens wise if you want more focal length might want to consider the 400 5.6 Will be cheeper, its razor sharp and can even use with a converter if you don't mind manual focusing with your camera. Its light and one of the best flight lenses ever !!!

Here is the original--Camera raw exported as jpg. As I compare the two, maybe the wine let me get carried away with NR. I placed him on the right in the crop because I liked the green bush in the bkgr better than the grass.

Thanks for the tips and the lens suggestion, I will look into it. Sure enjoy this site.

OOPS!, sent you the file where I had made some exposure adjustments in ACR converter, here is an almost identical shot with no adjustments.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Hi Dave, I like the less cropped version I like seeing the BG mountains- maybe a slight crop on left side NR and contrast boost and maybe a sliver off the bottom-looks like he's posing- very nice shot-can be easily tweaked into a great wall hanger!!

Hi Dave This is my version All I did was clone texture in the light area, small curves adjustment, slight crop and sharpen. Your original was very good Dave !!!

If you run into trouble with any more might want to post the original in a reply so we can give it a try!!

Thanks Alfred and all. This is a great site for us bozos. I looked back at my original and I really had gone downhill. I have PSE 7 so I can pretty much emulate what you did. Appreciate the encouragement also.

Dave, not a bozo! Sometimes it is easier to look at someone elses work and see it objectively! Happy Holidays!!!

David the only way to get better is comparing, no other way ..... do post and all are good post... everybody learns, I certainly do !!!

If you are able do upgrade to CS3 Its a big deal. Just the way curves work makes it worth it. btw another way to go is getting LightRoom since the conversion is even better than ACR (for the time) has local enhancement and all very easy to use. No high level expertise.

There are ways of getting through student programs which make the purchase less expensive if you figure a way to qualify. I know my wife teaches at the College and they get the discount for enrolling in the evening classes.

...forgot for that image I started getting cute and trying to bring detail in the dark area around neck. Pixels are blocked out and it just made it look like mush, best to go with the flow and not get heroic !!!
