I just missed having 3 other bulls in a line in this location. The Mission Mountains in Northwest Montana forms the background.

I love the different layers provided by the foreground and distant mountains. Elk is placed nicely in the frame, although it would also look good lower and more to the left.
Believe or nor, I'm missing the snow ;)

    Mike,
My personal preference for these kind of images is to keep the subject more to the extreme left, outside the RoT position.

As Favs has already pointed out this image has layers imparting a feeling of depth. If possible, I would prefer a tripod and f8 or higher aperture. However, I know that it is not always possible to photograph from a tripod and I have missed scenes while struggling with my tripod. During a trek, it is not always easy to photograph big animals. Were you in a trek or were you in a vehicle?

    Cheers,

Agree with comments Would try accentuating the bg layers for depth and do like the environmental approach very much. Difficult showing the large picture well and this is just fine !! Big Congrats !!!!

Mike, this image really gives me a feeling of the vastness and open-space of the West. The elk gives it the scale. Wonderful.
