    Default Snow Goose

I heard about a place nearby where literally thousands of snow geese congregate. I have never seen so many of them in one place and the sounds they make when they take off at once is amazing. I photographed this bird yesterday in the afternoon and liked the pose and BG.

Beautiful Axel!! The BG and how clean the bird is makes it for me. Also, the catch light is spot on!

Like the full wing spread and the fact the head is slightly turned towards you getting that all important catchlight...

    Nice work.

Thanks, Bryan. I photographed the geese in Bath. Where is Middle Creek? I just moved here a couple of months ago.

    Here are a couple websites:

    http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/v...a=487&q=159288

    http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/b...7&bc=0&c=69986

It can be a challange shooting there during the winter as they close most of the interior roads, which makes it difficult getting close to the geese. It's a good place to check out though as they often have Short eared owls there, and other migrants, including Tundra Swans.

Very nice head angle and eye contact. The exposure is on the money.

I agree with you Axel, the positioning and background are very nice, and the exposure is bang on.

Great pose and sharpness. You did well despite a less than ideal light angle. Bummer about the damaged first primary on the lower wing.

Fantastic, light, pose, eye contact, terrific exposure... wow, what a great image!!
I can´t resist to tone down the BG just a little bit. What do you think about the result?

BTW, I see a light halo around the dark primaries in the right wing that can be removed very easily

Thanks, Juan. The BG in the repost looks more dramatic but it actually looked like in the original. I'm wondering about the halos around the primaries. I didn't apply any curves or S/H and am not really sure how they got there.

Hey Juan, It looks great with the dark sky. How did you make your selection? Did you feather or use refine edges or do something else?

Not sure about the origin of the halo (?) Axel I did not witnessed the scene of the goose and I only can made an interpretation of the scene in terms of light balance. but I agree with you. You observed the scene and you processed the image to resemble what you saw. Way to go:)

Artie I rarely use feather to made a selection. I duplicate the layer and worked the levels in the main layer, toning down the whole image. Then I worked on the new layer, selecting with several strokes of the magic wand tool the sky and erasing it. This way I have the goose, with its original levels adjustment, over a copy of the image toned down. Then I used a brush with a soft edge to erase the edges of the goose in the upper layer to made the result looks natural.

I used here the same method that I used to process your "Cool pose" hummingbird´s image some time ago. It seems a bit compliacted but with some practice, like most things in the world, it can be done in a few seconds. ;)
