I really want to thank Fabs and Julie for posting about the Orton Effect, I have been having so much fun with this.
What I was wondering though is how did Julie get that effect to look so illustrated? Could you explain this "Illustrated Action"?
Posted photo is from a few years back, with my old D70 iso-1600 very grainy but work great for this effect.
I will take it easy now with Orton Effect postings, just practice getting it down pat.
Thanks for looking, C & C welcome
Thanks again
Paul, this is a beautiful image! I like what you've done but wonder if you tried any of the paint brush filters on it as well? Maybe brush daubs or watercolor? I bet this image has five or six possibilities to it.
As for the illustrated action, I downloaded it from a website that has a ton of free actions for Photoshop. You can find it here. Follow the link to the page where they have the actions for download and look for "DS_Illustration-free" - that's the one I use.
One thing about Illustrated actions, though...they produce a slight effect on a high resolution image and a profound effect on a low-resolution image. You can always back down the effect by clicking on the illustrated layer and lowering the opacity. I usually bring mine down to about 50-60% depending on the image. On high resolution images you will see small changes and that will be all you can do with them so lower the resolution (a good size is 5x7" or 8x10" and 72-100ppi). Then run the action and watch the magic happen.
Feel free to send me a PM if you need help loading the actions or getting them to work right.
I like this one very much, the cluster of trees provides nice habitat and you have both of them looking the right way. You can try adding Poster Edges at a low opacity for more definition.
You got a gorgeous result here- colors are so rich and lovely, and the subject/composition is great too. Looks like you don't need huge amounts of "practise"- got it down pretty well. :):)
