Hi Eric One think I like your doing is trying to crop in camera, not always possible but sure helps to try.

Remember to give the exp comp, app and dof. Does help to figure what you were doing !!!

For these type can give suggestions. Exposure wise you can figure by looking at the glare, if you can not stand to look at it and need to cover you eye will be three stops under, if its only horrendous then two stops and just a strong glare that bothers you one stop.

For focusing you need to go to manual and use the camera's dof preview to shield your eye. Looking through the viewfinder without it will fry your eye and won't be able to see much for a few minutes. Just push the dof preview, compose and make the exposure.

The other consideration for these type images is dof, you want lots of dof !!! Normally is no problem since there is lots of light. Finally is best to stop down to f 22 to have the neat looking effect from reflections.

Image wise as presented would darken the shadows quite, sort of like the dramatic mode for this one !!

Can't add anything else to Al's comments and good advice, but like what you were trying to do. F/22 for the star effects might have been fun.
