I appreciate everyone taking the time to comment on these somewhat boring shots- but they are a learning tool for me ,so all comments are appreciated.
not boring for me at all! the first thing that pops out at me is the two petals sticking up on the bottom side covering the inside part of the flower. other than that, i think it's perfect!! love the dof chosen. and the bg worked out great!!
Harold, I tried to fix that but I'm afraid my PS skills are not quite that good yet- It kind of looks manufactured- Think I'll stick to the first one since the petals didn't really bother me
Lady Denise,
I like the original one the best...On your repost, the center does not look natural, and the red tones and hues changed on the petals...I adjusted your base composition by adjusting the hues and selective sharpening the flower at key points; also made the background a tad warmer...see if you like...
Denise, for flower shots like this I would try very hard to get all of the flower in focus. Since the flower is not moving, I would increase the f-stop. Also, you could try focusing on a part of the flower that is closer to you. Alternatively, move your location to look more head on to the flower. Most important, experiment with your camera settings and positions to see what works best.
Gus, Ya much better-I am always afraid to sharpen-but it looks good-My repost was awful, I just tried it to see.
Harold and Dan -thanks for your tips and help

Thanks, this has been a good learning process for me-I never worked w/ manufactured scenes or lighting-it's harder than I thought-but will keep trying-thanks all for your imput
Denise, I learned flowers the same way you are. I just kept going at it and going at it and eventually you will figure out where you want that focus to be and live with the results.
One other thing you can do in this case is focus on the front, focus on the center and focus on the rear petals and then merge or mask them in PS. I like your second repost best but still wish there was a little bit more DOF here.
And, gosh, your BG is to die for! Beautiful lighting!!!
Jules, I guess I have to keep practicing and posting-because I really do learn alot from my mistakes here-and I do want to get good at these type of shots.
