    Is this some kind of "behavior"? Taken Sat., Dec. 13, in Northern CA.

    Yes and no Michael! If by "behaviour" you mean some ritualised display then this probably isn't one. However, the broad definition of "behaviour" is anything an animal does, so in this sense it sure is a behaviour!

    Not knowing the context, it looks like the birds are showing aggression to each other maybe because they are competing for food or a perch at a feeder perhaps? Maybe the male on the left is feeling amorous and female on the right is not so inclined!?

    BTW, the image shows the streaked flanks of the House Finch very nicely.

    You are absolutely right! They were near a feeder. I was trying to capture one of them in flight, and having a great deal of difficulty. They move so fast, I couldn't obtain focus. In retrospect I think that these two just happened upon each other, one going and one coming, and paused just long enough for me to get a shot, somewhat close to focus, but not spot on.
