    Default Trumpeter Swan family

The day after Thanksgiving, my wife and I drove to a lakeside park 10 miles from home all set to photograph textures and patterns in the new ice. Instead, we were surprised to find a large area of open water - with a family of trumpeter swans right in front of us. Of course, all my telephoto gear was AT HOME!! This necessitated a few well placed kicks to myself and a trip home to exchange gear. Amazingly, the birds were still there when I returned and were now joined by a second family group. They cooperated for a few minutes until the light fizzled. The next day this area was frozen and the swans were gone. The third adult in the background is part of the second family. The families tend to swim tightly bunched like this especially when near other families. In the original RAW file there are catchlights in the eyes of these birds that don't show up in this smaller version. 40D, 500 f/4, 1/3200, f/8, ISO 400, taken from car window using a BLUBB. Comments are welcome.

Hey Steve, Never go anywhere without the stuff. Fabulous job here with the head angles. Six perfect and one pretty good. A great arrangement and a nice design and crop. EXP right on. Way to go. Like the yakking bird in the back.

I echo Artie's comments. Love the group, light and headturns. Cool shot!

Very nice family portrait. I like the light and similar poses and only wish the bird with the open bill were sharper.
