While driving around looking for Owls, I came across this hawk at close range, for once he didn't take off. I am really beginning to appreciate the quality I can get with a good camera rest and the Nikon 300 2.8G ED-II with my tc14-II (I've had this lens for a little over a month)
D300 f5.6 iso-400 1/1250 only cropped Nikon 2.8 300 tc14 @ 420 mm
no noise removal, sharpening, natural light.
Very nice capture, but colours just look a touch drab to me. I've taken the liberty of posting your image with the white balance tweaked & a little more sharpening applied.
This species is a regular, but scarce winter visitor in my part of the UK. I've never got anywhere near the few individuals I've seen!!:(

Thanks Christopher and Wayne for your comments...Wayne itsfunny how on my computer your repost looks to bright...will have to invest some time on configuring my monitor. Our weather has been cloudy and overcast for I don't know how long...hope the sun comes out soon someday soon.

I love this guy.....especially the pose. Excellent detail....and it does look like a fine painting. I also like the repost by Wayne......certainly does add some warmth. Well done.
Repost is a big improvement over an already fine image. The perch in this is just great. A wonderful setting for this magnificent bird. That lens is will produce fantastic detail. One of Nikons best.
