    Default Ice storm #2-Short-eared owl

    Where's the thumbnail?

The ice storm got our local wintering short-eared owls actively hunting. Seen hunting at dawn, by 7:30AM they were done and I could only find one perched owl on this hill top of snow and ice. The lighting was dim and poor. Canon 500mm F4 and 1.4 on tripod, no flash, ISO 800.

I have images of the owl looking straight at the camera, but I'm liking more these head-turn shots, where the owl looks more relaxed and concentrating on its habitat instead of an approaching photographer.

One of my favourite Owls, love how the bird really sticks out and grabs your attention in this, nothing else in the image to distract you from the subject.

Don't you just love their eyes......

    Nice work.

Looks great despite the low light. I like the details, setting, angle, BG and pose.

Oh Jeff this one is really sweet. I absolutely agree with you that the head turn works in this case very good. The mood is very nice (I almost can feel the low temperature!). I think that this image can works very nicely with more room at the left, in a pano like composition.

I had one made and could not decide which to post. Which do you like better?

Love the simplicity of this image, Jeff. I totally like your composition and agree with you on the gaze.

Jeff I like both images but I prefer the second one croping just a little bit from the top and the bottom. I like a lot panoramic images of birds in habitat, of course it is a matter of personal taste :)

    Very good job Jeff
