This one a front view of the male's gorgeous red chest. I used the 400 DO, hand-held for this image at ISO 800, f6.3, 1/800 sec.

I like the shape of the tail feathers in this one. The eye looks a bit 'steely' and I might blur the BG more.

Here's a repost following your suggestions re: background. In addition to blurring background, I cloned out white spots in BG. Does this look better? Also removed branch behind the bird.

Yes, the repost looks much better! Cloning out the bright spots made a big difference. I would only clone out the second catchlight and tone down the highlights on the perch.

Looks like you had a wonderful trip Susan. Lovely capture of the quetzal and personally I like the original post as it captures so beautifully the environment where the Quetzal is found. IMO I do not find the BG distracting but actually very interesting. Many thanks for sharing.

Terrific image Susan. The BG is a litle bit distracting and I would prefer to see the head paralel to the sensor plane. The colors are fantastic and I like the perch a lot. The idea of blurring the BG with PS is very atractive but I think that it doesn´t work in this case because the selection of the BG is quite dificult here. It really works fine when the Bg is not us much detailed as in this case.
