Default Two Snow Geese/One Dark Cloud

When I noted east winds, dark clouds to the west, and a clear horizon I hustled the group up to the crane pools. With the 800, I worked from Highway 1 rather than from close to the birds. These guys took off just as I was spreading the legs of my tripod so the EXP, which turned out to be about +1/3 stop off the dark cloud, was a quick guess.

    Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with the EOS-1D MIII. ISO 640: 1/1000 at f/5.6.

Whenever I see two birds flying close together I pretty much hold the hammer down for two or three frames once they are in the zone and then hope for nice wing positions....

Do not be shy; all comments welcome.

Love the light, the sky, wing positions, eye contact; if only I could as quickly note conditions and "guess" exposure!!!!! Now can I say "great shot"? As always, thanks for the learnings.....

Yes, you may say great shot after noting what you like about an image. As for the guess, been doing this for 25 years in all, 7 with digital :) :) :)

The light is just awesome, the contrasts are superb. Very appealing overall. Sharpness looks great.
I like the image as is.

What I like is the crossing of the wings, providing a sense of "togetherness" and in sync. I've sometimes seen comments such as ,"too bad the wings are not separated" but don't agree with that desire when noted. I also like the fairly unusual sky color.

The white geese with crossed wings against the stark/dark dramatic sky makes this a very striking image IMO. At first glance it looked like polarized sky til I read the description. Beautiful.

Lovely light and contarst against the dark sky. You are very restrained if you only hold the hammer down for 2-3 frames. I usually think 2-3 seconds (@8fps) gives me a fair chance at a decent wing position - especially with multiple birds in frame :D

Lots to confess here. I am slow of reflexes and getting slower of mind lately... I try to make images only when the birds are in the perfect zone, which to my mind is very small. In actuality, I have trouble tracking the bird accurately in most cases so that even getting two or three framed as I want is a trick. Lastly, I have for probably close to two decades been a victim of the too perfect syndrome... I have a perfect image in the viewfinder in focus but I wait for it to be more perfect and wind up with nothing. Of the 2,000 best images I have seen through the viewfinder only 1,000 of them got recorded. Sad but true....

When I am photographing flight and action next to the young studs like O'Toole and Shadle I feel like throwing in the towel and tending my tomatoes full time.

    You got to be kidding!

Now the picture, nice timing, I read some many times about bird separation, but there are exceptions to the rules, and this one of them, to me the overlap of the wings enhance the picture. Exposure and sharpness are great also (and expected).

Deadly serious. Won't quit, but sometimes feel inadequate. The good news is that the other guys sometimes feel the same way when they see my stuff. Guess that that is what keeps me going.

Artie great light, BG and position of the wings here. I've got to get to Bosque someday.

As for "throwing in the towel", with all the great photographers on BPN I could either get discouraged or, inspired. I keep coming back to be inspired!

Ditto. A feeling of inadequacy is often a great motivator to improvement ;)

Love the pattern of the wings Artie. They really stand out against that clear blue sky, and both nice and sharp. Great capture Artie.

I did not see what others saw in this picture to be very good Artie.
But in my opinion it does not comes even near to what you have done before.
