A lovely image Fabs. Liked the intense look in its eyes. And what lovely details you've got - & that too at ISO1000...
How did you meter this scene Fabs - did u use an external light meter (the EXIF data says 'manual') ? Did you use flash for filling in ?

    Thank you guys.

Kaushik, no flash at all, the snow acts as reflector. We has very little light, so I went to ISO 1000, which is pretty clean in D3, no noise reduction needed in this scene.
I always use evaluative/matrix metering, went pretty much open and tried for the detail in the fox, not worrying about the snow. As it happens, 0 Ev was the ticket.

    More to come :)

More and more I'm drawn to images where the subject is involved in his own world, like here, gazing at something other than the photographer. THe snow on his back and the tip of his nose, as well as the falling snow is perfect.

    Fabs,
This is a lovely environmental image. Lots of details in the image. I envy how effortlessly you use ISO 1000 in the D3. 220 mm in a full frame looks pretty close. No wonder with a guide like Robert it was possible.

    Cheers,

Nice work Fabs. Try taking blue out of the white for a different look.

Sorry Robert, but they don't like yellow snow in Wyoming ;)

Very, very nice image, great composition and good feel. I get cold just by looking at it! I do get distracted a little by what looks like vignetting in the UR and LR corner, or are those just shadows on the snow? There are some darker spots along the top as well.
It's amazing that you can produce and image like this at ISO 1000. Great work!

    Thank you all!

Jerry, the sun was out and the texture of the snow mounds look darker because of the shadows. Since most of the image is white and the darks well wxposed, no noise reduction was needed at ISO 1000. The warm light helped, I find flat light brings out noise in the higher ISOs.

    Fabs,

    Sweet image.

No need to add yellow to subtract blue cast.

Nik Color Effex Pro White Neutral filter is killer for this, but you can use Selective Color > Blue, adding Yellow via slider. Use the mask if necessary to further control and isolate effect. I would dodge the dark areas.

Perfect comp, and the light and sharpness in this shows up so much incredible detail. I love the contrast of the snow against the orange colour of the fur. Congrats on an outstanding image Fabs.
