    Attached Images Attached Images

another from last friday afternoon at boynton inlet. fairly tame and an easy bird to fill the frame. only cropped a little from the left. in postprocessing established b&w points, saturation +6, selectively sharpened the bird and applied NR on the bg.

    D300, Bigma at 195mm, f/6, 1/1600s, -0.7EV, ISO 200, flash fill no beamer at +3.0EV

thanks for looking. your comments and critiques are appreciated.

Good colors, sharp details, good head angle and eye contact. I like the bird's shadow. My suggestion would be to clone out the brown streak thats touching the bird's bill....You got yourself a "10"...

How can you give out a ten Gus !!! ... we will never hear the end of it :)

Strong image Soft light sure makes a difference. Like the pose and fully agree with Gus !! btw for a slight different perspective go to absolute ground level !! Gives the bg/fg an new an interesting look !!! Big Congrats !!!

btw forgot.... here the sun angle is a bit off but with the soft light it works out fine !!! Might even increase edge contrast a bit !!

Nice one, Harold! The lighting and low angle really work here. You do such a nice job on exposing the light colored birds! I totally agree with Gus about the wave intersecting the bill, though. Take that out and you've got a darn fine print.

I know Harold, just when you think you have all the angles covered...... Great exposure and details. Just a few questions. Was it camera flash or an attached flash? If attached where did you point the flash, directly at the bird with a diffuser. And a reason for 3 EC for flash as opposed to 2???

jackie, it was an SB-600. without a better beamer and in bright conditions i normally go + a lot on the flash. i had been photographing at some greater distances so i wanted full power!! i had it pointed directly at the bird with no diffuser.

william, i used the -EV in order not to blow out the whites. even would have had me about a third over.

    thanks for your comments!!!

jackie, as a follow up, i remember now why i had it so high. the flash sync is, i think 1/320s. and since i was so much higher, 1/1600s, i compensated to get as much flash as possible.

Hi Mr H - **** fine agree with all of the above comments - does it need some CCW??

Agree with AL on the low angle - I am finding it really changes your perspective - hard work though looks like I am going to have to get a lot fitter - you can get so close to the birds if you are prepared to crawl on your stomach - you have to try it you will be amazed.

    :)

Great exposure in soft light. In fact, the whole image feels soft (not unsharp), just kind of mellow and the expression on the bird also looks a little drowsy.
Oh dear... maybe I looked at this image too long (smile).
