Not sure what were you setting on but anything appearing in this area would be tough bg wise and also filtered light. Really tough to do much with that type of lighting since parts of the bird will have a different exposure. As presented the biggest thing you could have done different is the bill merging with the stick. A step could have taken care (if you had the time) !!!

I agree with Mr. Forns on the techs. I think that you could of used fill flash to properly expose this little guy, and not have to worry about the lighting conditions and the shadows...:cool:
thanks for putting up with me on these adventures. i know i am supposed to do, more or less, portraits for you guys but sometimes i see something striking and want to share it. i hope it is ok.

Gus, it surprises me that you, of all people, wouldn't like a picture with that much light affecting the subject.
