    Default Sandhill crane in 3D

Artie has mentioned a couple of times that he gets a 3D effect with his 50D. This Sandhill crane has a 3D appearance to my eye, likely due to the combination of ruffled feathers and low light angle, perhaps with a little 50D thrown in as well. Regardless, I like it a lot.

Man, this guy really is puffed up! I like the shadow effect on the ruffled feathers - especially the tail area. This is one of those odd images where the top is perfectly level but the bottom makes it look like it needs rotation.

"I like it a lot" - me too Doug! The sharpness and detail in the body feathers is amazing, as is the colour and light. Eye contact is there, the BG and FG are fabulous. Agree with Daniel that there is an illusion that suggests the need for rotation, but it's not real.

That is amazing. That would make an excellent teaching tool for the difference between a "good" bird photograph and an "outstanding" one. All the elements are there plus great lighting and, as you mentioned, that "3D" effect.

Yes, the 50D is capable of creating images that look too sharp to be real. This one does need a bit of CCW rotation; the concentric circles of water never lie. The far shore is slightly angled. Perfect light and head angle. I wish that they had bulldozed all the grass away....

The pose, light and details are great. I also like the shadows and agree regarding rotation.

What time of day was this taken Doug? as the light is stunning. The low angle makes this, and what outstanding feather captured in this. Your photography is inspiring to say the least. Superb image Doug.

This one is really all about the light. The way it gets in those fluffed up feathers and creates shadows and depth makes it pop off the monitor. Just beautiful.

Perhaps the 50D adds something, but these kind of images are usually obtained with low clear light. This is a beautiful one!

Where was this crane when I was there? Great to see your photo and to meet you. I've been down 2 days fighting a computer virus. You're making that 50D more tempting

I have created and seen more than a few images created in "low, clear light" but I have seen the 3-D look only with images from the 50D.
