    Default Canon 70-200F4/Tripod

I was wondering about how others use the above lens when on tripod. Do you use the tripod ring or just attach the camera to the tripod.

I have tried two different tripod rings for this lens and neither holds the lens rock solid unless I something to shim the lens and hold it firmly.

    Thanks

Rocky I didn't use the ring just mounted the camera to tripod. The lens is so short it made sense.

I use the tripod collar but then again, I have one. But it is light enough that I don't see the problem using the camera.

The lens weight is about 760 g and most of Cannon DSLR's are about the same except for the 5D and the 1D's series which weigh more than the lens. What I would do, and it probably doesn't matter, is mount the heaviest item on the tripod. By doing it this way you will be putting less stress on the lens mount, unless you have a very long lens.

I do use it on a collar, but I like being able to quickly switch from horizontal to vertical. If I didn't already have the collar (the one from the 300 f/4) I wonder if I'd get one....then again, you can get some crazy cheap knock-off collars on ebay!

Thanks David for the link. At $150 for canon collar, forget it. I have L brackets for the cameras so just use that.

I bought one of the crazy cheap collars from the seller in David Kennedy's post. It took a while to arrive but it holds the 700-200 way better than the Canon collars I have tried. I am looking forward to trying it in the field...

I originally tried using the 70-200 without a collar on a 1/8 sec exposure there was noticeable downward drift. I ordered one of the knock off rings the next day. Once it came, I haven't had it off the lens.

Mine took a while longer to arrive than anticipated (which I was warned might happen) but so far so good. The one thing I see to be careful about is not over loosening the collar--there is no snappy thing like on the canon collar--If you went nuts loosening the collar could pop open and the right could slip out to the ground or water. I think it is a remote possibility as long as you are aware.
