People indicated me that I should be able to photography insects with my new 300mm USM f4.0 + TC 1.4x of Canon. That is one of the reason I chose this lens instead of the 100-400mm zoom. So, they tell me the truth :-) Here is a Canadian tiger swallowtail (Papilio canadensis) photographied, hand-held, at East Angus (Quebec, Canada) last June.
It is a pity that I was so close to the butterfly because he is a little bit tight into the frame in my opinion but I like the colors..... :-/
What do you think of this full frame picture?
Cheers!
Michel

Michel, I agree it's a close crop but I like it for a couple of reasons. First, the butterfly is large enough to carry this off - he's a powerful presence in this image and you did a wonderful job of bringing out good detail all throughout him while leaving the BG nicely blurred.
Those telephoto lenses make for some pretty awesome macro lenses because they really condense down the BG. I use my 70-200mm f/4L almost as much as i use my 100mm macro.
A little tight? Okay. But a beautiful image. The butterfly is gorgeous. And the background is beautiful. The flower complement the butterfly perfectly. very well done.
Beautiful composition, the details and colors are superb, love the texture. It does seem to be a wee bit too tight in frame for my taste...good show...
