At some point during the optimization of this blackbird silhouette I hit the wrong keys by mistake. This reversed silhouette was the result. See the next pane for the original and the tech specs.

This is the "normal" silhouette. It was created with the Canon 800mm f/5.6 L IS lens, the 1.4X II TC, and the EOS-1D MIII. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/1600 sec. at f/13. What is really interesting about both images is that the backlight around the head of the second bird from the bottom makes it look as if the branch behind the bird has somehow been severed.

As one of the birds was facing away with a very foreshortened almost invisible bill I borrowed and added a bill from one of the other birds.

    Hi Mr. Morris,
Welcome back...I actually like the birds in white with the piano black background...It looks like a scene from the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds". and the second image makes a very powerful, bold high key image; both silhouettes images are razor sharp...congrats Sir...

Where you been hiding Artie? Love the image...it does look like a poster for the movie, "Birds"! I would respectfully suggest taking a small slice off the top. It feels like a bit too much negative space to me - but just a little bit.

Wonder what this would look like with red filled in on all the birds?

Hello. Thankyou for the repost!!!!!! Did you guys know the Birds movie was based on an actual town where the birds had ingested toxins and the stuff made them attack people , the same toxin sickness the sea lions get from eating bad mussel shell, forget the name of it. Little bit of trivia, cause I can't edit or do another picture tonight!

Oh I forgot! Love the inverse silhouette. I love doing them, and I also take it further and make a note card in sketch in elements ps out of it. I love editing with that ps! Love your black/white birds! Wish I had your zoom...lol.

Very neat effect, the branch looking broken by backlight..its amazing what happens sometimes with digital..will try reversing some of my silhouette photos..played with above composition, used graphic pen with left hand diagonal slant. Adjust bird head and move branch lower...I like the results...

Where is Bosque?..funny up until people wrote about it in posting's never heard of it. At first I assumed it was in Florida.

Thakns Paul. I like the new COMP but am not too sure about the spackle <smile>

Bsoque del Apache is a NWR 70 miles south of Albuquerque, NM. I have been bringing groups there in late fall for the past 14 years (since I lost my beloved wife and best friend to breast cancer in 1994). It is a wondrous place with light and birds and mountains, one of my three soul places.

It is AWESOME light there. I felt like I had never worked under such amazing light. I have some gorgeous Pintails and Sandhill Cranes that practically glow because of that light. I am sorry about your loss. Cancer is so terrible. Nature is the best healer for me also. People as healers aren't so great, but God made nature with exactly what we ALL need for healing. Thankyou again for letting ME know about it... Funny calling that look spackle..... Just use Film Grain, Paul, and crank up the highlights and turn off the graininess and it should disappear. :)

Thanks Patty for you kind words about Elaine and for your membership support. There is a brick in Elaine's memory on the wall of the new education center. She is about three or four up and three or four in from the lower left corner: Elaine Belsky Morris. Say "Hi" for me when you go by her. I always give her a kiss.
