Hi, Probably like a million other photos...but none that I have to date. Yes, you really can get this close at Sanibel fishing pier, which is amazing to me, because where I live, a Great Blue Heron will tolerate you maybe as close as 200 yards. I had a great, but too short visit in mid-November during some of the cold mornings that reminded me of back home in BC.

    Canon 50D, 100-400 L @ 260 mm ISO 200, Manual exposure 1/1000s @ f/5.6, handheld

Comments and critique are welcome and appreciated...thanks for looking!

    Cheers!

I have the 40D, how do you like the 50. Nice shot for a 100 - 400 L. I have the same lenses and as you know it is soft at the tips. How close were you to the subject.

Hi Jeff, I have both a 40 and a 50...the 50 is noticeably faster at achieving focus. That, the 50% more pixels, and the high res lcd where enough reason to upgrade for me. That and I don't have to buy a whole new underwater housing for this upgrade.

    Cheers!

Lovely sharp portrait, Bruce. I like teh graduated Grey/Blue BG with the intense colour of the bill and the eye is a great focal point. I would probably tone done the pale halo above the dark bill tip.

Hi bruce! I know what you mean! Where I live there are 100's of herons but they are so afraid of people coz they chase them away. The other day I was in another city and there was one of them and he let me get really close, maybe 20 feet. I was so happy! Nice capture! cheers!

Super sharp Bruce, and I think you have exposed the whites nicely. That eye is amazing. Well captured.
