This is the shot I was playing around the other day. Not the best pose of this bufflehead, but also not really happy with the others either.

D300 with 200-400@400mm on tripod. Manual exposure mode, no flash; ISO 800 f4 1/1250sec.

Enhanced the colors, lightened the head of the duck to hopefully helps showing the colors more. A little bit linear burn on some of the white areas. Plus other usual pp stuff. Cropped the top and the left a bit for composition purpose.

    C&C welcome!

Hi desmond - I like the low angle and the forward movement - HA and eye contact are good, colours are good and whites seem to be in check.
    I like :)

Desmond it looks like you got closer than me. I was looking to see if you had more feather detail but it looks about the same. Sharper than mine, I hope to go back and get some more.

Nice low angle, exposure, and details. A slight head turn would add to an already strong image. Like it a lot!

Jackie, here's some other bufflehead photos by other photogs. The first link is to Glenn Bartley's (of BPN):

Here's a couple more from another photog:

I believe they all shot under different lighting conditions than yours and mine. I'm guessing they also processed the colors of the buffleduck's head somewhat. The couple of times that I saw the buffleheads tell me that the colors on the head are darker than as shown in their photos. But I've never seen buffleheads under bright or direct sunlight though.

Desmond - like this a lot. The subtle tints in the water nicely echo the head hues. In the reflection there is a strange tuft of feathers standing straight up (down?) off the top (bottom?) of the head.
Well done. You gotta love buffleheads.

Thanks for the links Desmond, looks like feather detail in the whites is hard to come by judging by the links. The colours look more iridescent too. You had a bit of sun and me drab rain (what else). I think we are both on the right track. Would be interesting to see if Artie has taken pics of these birds. Thanks for the info. BTW was this an early morning shot??
